        CEDAR
FALLS GUN CLUB'S 25TH ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL STATE SHOOT

 SATURDAY, MAY 1st .2010

For the past twenty-five years, the Cedar Falls Gun Club has held a statewide trap shooting competition for high school-age students. As more schools have recognized trap shooting as a sport, the attendance rose to forty schools and 315 participants in 2009. Many experienced shooters volunteer to help make this a safe competition, and many parents attended, making the total attendance of six hundred not unusual.

The cost of participating in this event has risen to over $30.00 the day of the event and several hundred dollars to practice in preparation for the competition, Therefore, the Cedar Falls Gun Club is looking for sponsors who are interested in helping high school-aged students discover the fun of trap shooting. Please help us promote this event that demonstates the safe use of firearms for high school-aged students.

    CEDAR FALLS GUN CLUB’S

25TH ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL STATE SHOOT

RULE REMINDERS FOR THE 2010 SHOOT

On the TEAM REGISTRATION FORM, each team must have an adult supervisor. This person will accompany the team to the trap station during its turn and will act as an additional safety supervisor. Also, a school official or coach must verify that each student meets the requirements to participate in sports at his/her school. On the TOURNAMENT RULES sheet, these rules are being highlighted: Item #3 refers to the previously mentioned adult supervisor. Items #4 and #7 require the catching of shells on semi-automatic guns and the catching of all shells before they hit the ground. Therefore, shell bags, vests, or nail aprons will be required. No reloaded shells will be allowed for the competition, and purchased shells must meet the DNR’s [Department of Natural Resources] ammunition guidelines. The Cedar Falls Gun Club has implemented these rules to coordinate with the Iowa DNR in establishing a uniform safety standard for Iowa High School Trap Shooting. These rules are available on the Iowa DNR website: www.iowadnr.com/law/shootingsports/files/hsrulebook09.pdf . We recommend that all coaches review these rules. These rules must be followed if your school wishes to use the scores from this shoot for the June 4-5 Scholastic and High School Trap Shoot programs.

The Cedar Falls Guns Club’s 25th Annual High School State Shoot does not require any membership or pre-qualification to compete. Since this is the original Iowa statewide shoot, the CFGC will be awarding trophies for the top six teams, as well as for the top six male and the top six female shooters. We hope that we can serve both the new shooters and the more experienced shooters who wish to participate in the Scholastic and High School Trap Shoot programs.

          1. PRE-REGISTRATION:

To help us better prepare for this event, please e-mail or phone Nate Northey, Shoot Director, by April 17, 2010. Give him the number of participants and whether your students have prom on May 1nd. Those athletic directors/coaches/sponsors who call first with the number of participants will squad first.

Lunch is not included in this year's registration fee. A food service vendor will be on-site to sell food items.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

    SAFETY AND PROCEDURES

    • Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Any unsafe behavior should be reported immediately to an official or coach/sponsor.

    SHOOTERS:

    • Keep your gun unloaded and your action open until you are on the firing line and it is your turn to shoot.
    • Keep your gun barrel pointed down when you are moving from the waiting area to the firing line, and never point your gun at another person.
    • When on the firing line, keep your gun barrel pointed down range while moving from post to post with the action open and unloaded, especially when moving from Post #5 to Post #1.
    • Load only one shell into the action of your gun. If the action of your gun requires you to load the magazine, do not load the shell until it is your turn to shoot.
    • Keep the action of your gun open until it is your turn to shoot. Closing your action early can be an irritation to the shooter next to you who is concentrating on his/her target, and its sound can release a target unnecessarily.
    • When it is your turn to shoot: Raise the gun to your shoulder, take a breath, focus on your site picture, and yell "PULL!" to release the target.
    • After you shoot, eject the empty shell into your hand and deposit it in your pouch. If the shell hits the ground, do not pick it up until you have completed the round of 25 targets.
    • The scorer will call "LOSS!" if you miss the target. If you think you hit the target, tell the official now. Most of the time, you will know if you missed. At the end of each round while you are moving to the next post, the scorer will read off the number of targets each shooter has hit. At the end of the round, check the scorer’s sheet for your score. If you want to question your score, this is the time.

    • You will shoot five targets at each post. The shooter on Post #1 who begins the first round will be the team captain and will start each round. After each round, you will rotate to your right and move to the next post, with Post #5 moving to Post #1.

    • If your gun jams or you have a misfire, do not turn around. Keep the gun pointed down range and ask for help from the scorer.
      • Wear a shooter’s vest or use a shell bag or nail apron to hold your loaded and empty shells. Do not place your box of loaded shells on the ground beside you and then bend down to pick up your shells from the box on the firing line.
      • You must wear ear and eye protection while on the firing line.
      • Trap shells are usually 2 ¾ drams with 7-1/2 to 9 shot. DNR’s ammunition rules will apply, and no reloaded shells will be allowed in the competition.
