CFGC FLOOD REPAIR RAFFLE

                              Drawing on July 26, 2009
                                            Need NOT be present to win

               THE PRIZE:  A Benelli Ultra-Light, 12 Ga.
                                     Semi-Auto Shotgun --Wood Stock

         With the assistance of a huge number of people over the past twelve
         months, the Cedar Falls Gun Club is making a comeback.  Some flood
         repairs still must be completed, though.

   Please support these repair efforts by participating in this RAFFLE

                        Don't,   happy!

      The photo above of the south side of the clubhouse area was taken by CFGC Vice-President, Harry Hagge, on June 10, 2008.  May it serve as a reminder of the flood conditions that existed at the Cedar Falls Gun Club for June and part of July.  Also, may it remind us of the dedicated effort given by well over a hundred people to restore the clubhouse and grounds for the Iowa State Shoot in late July.  The work was hard and dirty and seemingly unending.  However, the perseverance paid off, and the CFGC is looking forward to a GREAT 2009!

   SINCERE THANKS to everyone who joined the clean-up effort at the Cedar Falls Gun Club!

THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2008, from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M.
     Ed Griffith had the main well water supply tested, and the test results showed no contamination.  He is
     still trying to get the other two sand point wells operational.

     FYI:  The first of two Pheasant Flurry Fun Shoots was held tonight from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M.

*  TUESDAY, JULY 8, 2008, from 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M.
     Painting Day #2:  Eager to begin their day's work on the clubhouse women's restroom, Alice and Darrel
     Baker returned for another round of painting and touching up.  Their paint-splattered faces and clothes were
     evidence of their diligent efforts.  This Dynamic Duo not only put on a fresh coat of beige paint, they also
     purchased the necessary paint and supplies for this job.  On behalf of the CFGC members, guests, and Board
     of Directors:

"Alice and Darrel, your generous donation of paint and labor for this restroom face lift
     is greatly appreciated.  MANY THANKS!"
JG

Larry Mikkelsen and Lyle Hildebrand helped dry and box targets.  FINE WORK, FELLAS!

     Brian Harris of Harris Cleaning came out and devoted much of the day cleaning out the furnace ductwork
     under the concrete floor in the clubhouse.
Brian, THANKS for coming to the rescue so quickly!

Now the furnace/air conditioner replacement can begin.

*  MONDAY, JULY 7, 2008, from 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M.

Painting Day #1:  Getting an early start today,
Alice and Darrel Baker painted the men's restroom walls and
     ceiling today.  Click HERE
to watch this team in action.  They will return tomorrow to work their magic on the
     women's restroom.
SUPER JOB, BAKERS!

     Larry

Gross and Rick LeFevre helped JG load and deliver the sandblasted restroom partitions to Deery
     Brothers Collision Center for painting.   Then Nate Northey and Rick took charge of removing the long, low,
     heavy counter from the clubhouse and the old free-standing cabinet from the kitchen.  Both items were suffering
     from disgusting flood water fuzz and warped, blackened wood.  YUK!

     Also, Young Plumbing and Heating [THANK YOU to member Mark Tink for the assistance he provided!]
     checked out the two furnaces and two air conditioners, as well as the 75-gallon water heater.  Since all were
     submerged in the 22 inches of flood water, most will probably need to be replaced.  However, before any new
     furnace/air conditioner can be installed, the furnace ductwork under the concrete clubhouse floor will need to be
     thoroughly cleaned, as the flood water went down into the registers.  Water is needed to do this ductwork
     cleaning, so the main well pump must be started.

     Having no key for the Target Shed, JG could not give a team of folks access to all those wet and dry
     targets that needed attention, though.  Tomorrow. . . .

*  SUNDAY, JULY 6, 2008, from 12:00 until 4:00 P.M.
     Today Aaron and Casey Connor returned and attacked still-muddy clubhouse floors with a mop, stiff brush,
     bleach solution and gusto.  In addition, Aaron removed old grease and grime from the south kitchen wall
     [using a 6-foot ladder] and floor [using knee pads], while Casey removed the dirt from the cold air duct covers
     and a free-standing metal announcement sign.  Earl and Jordan Van Sickle kept mopping those muddy, gray
     paint chip-covered shower floors in the women's restroom until the shower  floors were finally revealed.  Bud
     Stock wielded a stiff brush and plenty of elbow grease to continue the restroom shower clean up.  Then Earl
     and Jordan shifted job gears and pulled weeds on the east side of the clubhouse.  Our bench painter
     extraordinaire, Jim Lynch, spent several hours sanding two old  green benches and then applying a fresh
     green coat of paint to them.

     Lending their strength to the task of removing the old upright Coldspot freezer's door and then the freezer itself
     from the clubhouse were Aaron, Casey, Earl, and Jordan.  Therefore, the CFGC appliance graveyard by the
     driveway gained one more victim.  However, drivers-by frequently stopped and helped themselves to the
     metal junk.  By the end of the Work Day, only the stove, freezer door, and freezer remained by the driveway.

     Our gratitude is heartily extended to those STALWART fellows who devoted time and energy to The Cause
     today.  SINCERE THANKS!

* SATURDAY, JULY 5, 2008, from 9:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.

JG worked in the kitchen all day and dozens of jobs remain.  The old stove was hauled out to the newly-formed
     pick-up pile by the driveway.  Tomorrow the old Coldspot freezer will join the stove, and its door must be
     removed.  Since the flood water covered the bottom shelf of every kitchen cabinet for several days, this old
     plywood is black, soggy, smelly, wavy, and falling apart.  Might someone please volunteer to remove this
     rotten wood and replace the shelves?

     Today's FEARLESS workers were Bud Stock, Larry Gross, Aaron Connor and his son Casey.  You guys are
     the best
!  THANK YOU!  The day's accomplishments can be viewed by clicking HERE.

*  FRIDAY, JULY 4, 2008

Darrel and Alice Baker checked out the clubhouse restroom painting situation this morning.  They will begin the
     painting on Monday.
Does anyone have an airless paint sprayer the Bakers can use?

Although the refrigerator began cooling during the short time it was plugged in, it will need to be plugged in for a
     much longer time before we can say with certainty that it is running well.  However, it did receive a much-needed
     bleach solution cleaning inside.  Then all movable plastic parts were taken to the Griffith home for serious, hot
     soapy water scrubbing and more disinfecting.

     Also, the kitchen spot where the now-defunct stove sat is undergoing a major grease and grime removal, so the
     replacement stove will have an immediate place to call home.  That replacement stove certainly can be a used
     appliance in good working condition, too.  Might anyone have a used stove in good working order and be willing
     to donate it to the CFGC?

     Happy Freedom Day!

*  THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2008
     The main breaker switch was turned on this morning, and the Cedar Falls Gun Club now has power!

*
TUESDAY, JULY 1, 2008, from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M.

   TARGETS WERE THROWN TODAY!

Thirty-three out of the thirty-seven trap machines worked perfectly, and the other four will only
need minor adjustments.  Then the operational trap machines were replaced  in the trap houses.
What a relief!  ISTA folks bench tested them with a generator, as the electrical meters will not be
reinstalled until tomorrow morning.

One minor injury occurred, though.  Dean Ekstrom acquired a 5/8-inch slice in a finger when a
screwdriver slipped.  Larry Mikkelsen rushed Dean to Sartori Hospital Emergency Room, where
     his finger received three stitches.  Dean and Larry were back on the job in just a short while.  Not much can
     deter our volunteers when they're involved in a task.  Attaboy, Dean!

     The sandblasted restroom partitions were picked up from TLP Enterprises and returned to the clubhouse.  Now
     we need to find someone who is willing to paint them.  If you would like to volunteer for this special job, please
     contact Jane Griffith.  She will provide the necessary primer, paint, and nap-free roller for this project.  For
     convenience's sake, the painting will be completed in the clubhouse.

     Since the restroom partitions will be freshly painted, it would be even better if someone would also volunteer to
     paint the restroom walls before the partitions are reinstalled.  Yet another improvement would be the addition of
     the addition of white pedestal sinks--two in the men's room and one in the ladies' room.  Those dated orangey
     sink counters would be a thing of the past.  Since all three sinks have relatively new faucets, they could hopefully
     be used on the pedestal sinks.  Might anyone like to donate these sinks?  Think about the nice, updated
     appearance of the clubhouse's restrooms when these suggested  improvements are implemented.

     Marj Pepin cleaned restrooms all day and quipped that it had been a long time since she had been
     so "intimate with vitreous china."  Okay, Marj, we'll take your word for that.  A job well done, though!
     Incidentally, Marj has also volunteered to replace all the shower curtains in both the clubhouse and
     State's restrooms.  We appreciate that offer, Marj.  Thank you.

CFGC extends its gratitude to the following FANTASTIC volunteers who gave of their time today:
     Jon Peterson, Steve Manary, Barrie Swinbank, Ron Ballou, Dean Ekstrom, Jerry Pierce, Dave "Doc" Winters,
     Steve Scheib, Don Wickcliff, Mike Williams, Gayle Lawson, Butch Willard [back for Day #2], Marj Pepin,
     Mark Simkins, Gary Jacobsen, Jim Lynch, Bud Stock, Perry Groen, Denny Bigelow, Larry Mikkelsen, Dave
     Jacob, Dan Osgood, Dave Weinberg, Ed and Jane Griffith.
                                               [I apologize if someone's name has been omitted.  JG]

*  MONDAY, JUNE 30, 2008, from 9:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.

  Butch Willard drove to the CFGC from Ankeny to help.  He learned about our plight from the new website,

www.cedarfallsgunclub.com , and wanted to be involved to make certain the Home Grounds were ready for the
     Iowa State Shoot.  In fact, Butch was spending the night in a local motel
because he also wanted to work on
     Tuesday.  Now that's the spirit!
THANKS, Butch!

Oh, did I mention that Butch was the only volunteer who showed up today to work?  Well, I've mentioned it
     now.  Hmmmm?

Butch gladly accompanied me on the trip to take the metal restroom partitions to TLP Enterprises to be
     sandblasted.  Then he did some intense rubbing on the clubhouse chairs to remove flood water residue.  Check
     out a couple photos of Butch busily doing his chair routine by clicking
HERE

Jim Lynch stopped by to pick up another two more red, white, and blue clubhouse gun racks to take home and
     paint, too.

*   SUNDAY, JUNE 29, 2008, from 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M.

** SPECIAL "SAVE OUR TARGETS" CAMPAIGN from NOON until 6:00 P.M.
    Another glorious day!  The sunshine and continuous breeze provide ideal conditions for air drying thousands of
    birds.  We owe a big THANK YOU to the following AWESOME volunteers who spent many hours handling
    soggy cardboard boxes and dripping targets:
                                                            Ed and Jane Griffith [CFGC]
                                                            Glen Hansen [CFGC]
                                                            Tom Kehoe [CFGC]
                                                            Dan Osgood [CFGC]
                                                            Ron Poock [CFGC]
                         Randy and Kay Strauss [Otter Creek Sportsmen's Club, Cedar Rapids, IA]
                                                            Dave Weinberg [CFGC]

     With yesterday and today's "SAVE OUR TARGETS" Campaign, we estimate that $4,540.00 in targets have
     been saved so far from the damage of 22-inch flood waters.  Another 306 boxes of wet targets still need to be
     dried out with a replacement value of $3,234.00.  That represents a total target replacement cost of $7,740.00
     that the Cedar Falls Gun Club will be spared when this project has been completed!
                                                        HOW EXCITING IS THAT!

     Currently our "S.O.T." campaign has halted due to a lack of target boxes.  Otter Creek Sportsmen's Club
     [OCSC] has kindly offered to save the boxes from its July 4th Weekend Shoot for us.  The plan for getting these
     boxes from Cedar Rapids to the CFGC is this:

                 **
To all CFGC members attending the OCSC July 4th Weekend Shoot,
                      PLEASE load your vehicles with as many of these target boxes as possible
                      and bring them back to the CFGC July 7 or 8.**
      Click HERE to view today's photo album.  Targets, anyone?

*  SATURDAY, JUNE 28, 2008, from 9:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M.
    Power washed trap houses; removed metal restroom stall
partitions for sandblasting on Monday; cleaned floors
     in some dry trap houses; picked up broken targets and cardboard boxes thrown outside trap houses; assembled
     144 target boxes; air dried and boxed targets found inside trap houses; began removing the wet target boxes [the
     bottom three rows] from 28 pallets--completed 11 pallets--air drying and reboxing the targets--the unofficial
     beginning of the "SAVE OUR TARGETS" Campaign.

    An AMAZING work crew showed up today!  This lengthy list of dedicated CFGC members and friends

Click HERE to check out today's activity.

    FYI:  Several workers already have provided their assistance multiple times and, I know, will continue that
             pattern.  I will attempt to keep better track of folks, too.  As you might imagine, activity around the Gun
             Club becomes rather hectic at times, and my train of thought veers off the tracks.  CHOO-CHOO. . . .
